A home grown plot to kill US law enforcement officers ends with a raid on a militia cult group. How close did they come to pulling it off? Law enforcement officials in this country say members of what they call a militia-style cult based in Michigan are behind bars tonight. They’re charged with plotting to kill police officers in hopes of starting an anti-government uprising. Federal agents say the group was getting ready to take some sort of action next month. Our justice correspondent법무성 출입기자 Pete Williams has been following this story all days with this from our Washington newsroom. Pete, good evening.
Brian? The FBI actually penetrated this group and headed under close surveillance for a year and a half, able to shut it down whenever it was about to take action. And federal agents believed that day was drawing near. The FBI along with local police and other federal agents swooped down엄습하다 in force over the weekend, arresting eight people, most of them in southern Michigan, and a few in Ohio and Indiana. All were members of a militia group that called itself the Hutaree saying on their website, they believed in preparing for an anti-Christ and in getting ready to defend themselves.
Videos they posted on the Internet show them in their own distinctive uniforms conducting paramilitary exercises. But other militia groups in Michigan wanted nothing to do with the Hutaree. “They are gearing up to fight alongside Jesus against the forces of Satan.” Among the forces of evil, the group belief was anyone in the government beginning with local police. Court documents say the group talked about ways to lure police for an attack. In one plan, they kill a policeman, then bombed the officer’s funeral procession.
Investigators say the group’s leader was 45-year-old Dave Brian Stone of Clayton, Michigan. Stone’s second wife and two sons were also charged. Stone’s first wife and the mother of his oldest child said he deserves to be punished.
