From NBC News world headquarters in New York, this is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Good evening. We begin tonight with a breaking new story out of West Virginia where there’s been an accident in an apparent explosion in a coal mine. Getting coal out of the ground is a daily part of life in that part of the country. Our need for electricity demands it and great danger comes with it. And it appears disaster has struck the mining industry yet again.

 

We’ll begin with our own Ron Allen who’s been following this story since very first word of the possible loss of life and miners trapped underground. Ron, good evening. Good evening, Brian. It’s very difficult to tell at this hour exactly what has happened. But clearly an explosion in a coal mine could be a very difficult and deadly situation.

 

Tonight, on World News. Breaking news. There has been a mine explosion in West Virginia. Many are dead and missing. From ABC News, this is ABC World News with Diane Sawyer. Good evening. As we come on the air tonight, we begin with breaking news. A mine disaster in West Virginia. At least, half a dozen miners confirmed dead. Many more are missing. David Muir has been taking all the latest reports. And he’s gotten them for us. David? Diane? As you know, we just got off the phone with the West Virginia state police and they do confirm that the explosion happened at the Massey Energy Upper Big Branch Mine. Now that is south of Charleston. We’re told about 30 miles south of Charleston in fact.

 

Good evening. Katie is on assignment tonight. We’re beginning with breaking news. An explosion at a coalmine in West Virginia about 30 miles south of Charleston. Officials say at least six miners are dead. 21 others missing at the Upper Big Branch Mine. CBS News correspondent Bob Orr is following developments and he has more. Bob, good evening. Good evening, Harry. Well, it’s around 3 o’clock this afternoon with an explosion rocked the coalmine in Whitesville, West Virginia. Now for locator that’s about an hour south of the capital of Charleston.

 

A state mining official in West Virginia now confirms that six miners are dead. 21 others still unaccounted for and may be trapped. Rescue workers, we’re told, are on the scene at the Upper Big Branch South Mine.
