(경제) 해안 유전개발 계획발표

Tonight, voyage to the bottom of the sea. President Obama gives a thumbs up to offshore drilling. Will it reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil? From CBS News world headquarters in New York, this is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Good evening, everyone. It is controversial. But President Obama says it is necessary for the American economy. So today, he announced a major expansion of drilling for oil and gas along the southern Atlantic coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and parts of Alaska.

The President said the drilling is part of an overall전반적인 strategy to reduce America’s dependence on foreign energy and he insisted the environment will be protected. Chip Reid is at the White House tonight. And Chip, The President is alienating멀리하다 소원하게 하다 plenty of people with this decision? Well, Katie, the President says he is sticking out입장을 취하다 a middle position on coastal drilling. And neither the left nor the right is happy.

“Today, we’re announcing the expansion of offshore oil and gas exploration. But in ways that balance the need to harness동력화하다 domestic energy resources and the need to protect America’s natural resources.” The President’s plan would allow drilling along the south Atlantic coast in the Gulf of Mexico 125 miles from Florida and on the north coast of Alaska. The ban would remain in place on the north Atlantic coast and the west coast and now in Alaska’s Bristol Bay.

Many Republicans who have long advocated for more drilling say the plan doesn’t go far enough. Environmentalists say it’s a recipe비결 for disaster. “Offshore drilling is still a dirty and dangerous industry that’s not compatible, we think, with beaches and coastlines.” Now the President said way back in his state of the union address, last year that he was going to be making some tough decisions on opening up the coast for drilling. So environmentalists shouldn’t be surprised, but they sure are disappointed. Katie?

And Chip? If he’s hearing it from both sides, what is the President’s reasoning behind this move? Well, two major things. No.1, he says that if we’re ever going to free ourselves from dependence on foreign oil, you’ve got to try everything, and that includes nuclear, as he said recently, and oil and gas, even drilling off the coast. He also says this is about jobs in this economic environment and this plan will create jobs.
