Good evening. it was a catastrophic비극적인 explosion deep underground and the loss of life is staggering, even for the coal mining industry in West Virginia that has seen so much tragedy over the years. Tonight, 25 miners are dead. Another 4 are still missing. There's a herculean엄청 힘든 and urgent effort under way by rescuers to drill several holes as deep as 1,200 feet down to release trapped gas inside the mine.

 

I'm Harry Smith in Montcoal, West Virginia, home to the Big Branch Mine where yesterday a devastating explosion took the lives of 25 men. 18 bodies are still trapped inside and 4 miners are still unaccounted for. But the air inside the mineshaft수직갱도 is so poisonous. Rescue work is impossible. So family and friends are trapped, too, between hope and despair. this is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, tonight Harry Smith reporting tonight from the site of the mine disaster in West Virginia.

 

Good evening. Katie is on assignment. Well, it has been more than 24 hours now since the explosion which rocked to the Upper Big Branch Mine here in rural West Virginia. And as this community mourns the 25 who died, rescue teams are already preparing to go after the 4 who are still unaccounted for in the fading hope that they still make the alive.

 

Tonight, we are live to report on the tragedy in West Virginia where there's a race against time to reach 4 miners who may be still trapped at the end of a 7000 foot shaft into the mountain. And you'll hear for the first time from miners who made it out and survived the explosion. We drive across the mountain as community grieves. And you'll meet a woman who lost her husband, her two nephews, but her son barely escaped. Brian Ross investigates allegations of repeated safety violations by the company managing the mine. And we put tough questions to the chief executive as tonight we report on the miners who are in mourning, holding on, and questioning what happened to those they love.
