(재해) 서부 7.2 강진

Shake up. A powerful earthquake hit southern California across a huge area. How bad was it and what’s to come? As they always say and liftoff, a predawn liftoff for the space shuttle Discovery on a mission to deliver cargo and science equipment to the international space station. But when the shuttle docks on Wednesday, we will have a first time situation in space. Four women together on the space station for the first time. The single largest in space gathering of female astronauts. And the milestone comes 47 years after the Russian sent the first female cosmonaut into earth’s orbit.

A lot of people on the west coast are being warned tonight to be ready for aftershocks after yesterday’s powerful 7.2 earthquake that left at least people dead. The quake was centered in Mexico, but felt by an estimated 25 million Americans as far away as Arizona and Nevada, but mostly in southern California where tonight our own George Louise is right near the epicenter. George, good evening.

Good evening, Brian. That building inspectors tonight have said that 80% of the buildings in the old downtown part of Calexico, California are unsafe to enter. A big economic blow for a community already hard hit by the recession. As the inspectors survey the extensive damage, merchants began cleaning up. At the 99 cents store, goods were strewn흩트리다 all over the aisles while clerks try to keep the business going out on the sidewalk.

There’s plenty of home video at the moment the earthquake hit. Panic in the streets of Mexicali.

And on Twitter, a sloshing출렁거리는 swimming pool in Brawley, California. It is remarkable given the magnitude of the quake that no one on the US side of the border was killed. It was a different story south of the border in Mexicali where building standards are more lax and some structure such as this parking garage just collapsed.

Two people on the Mexico side were killed and scores injured. After Mexicali’s general hospital was closed when the water and electricity failed, doctors and nurses treated patients outdoors. Scientists believe the quake occurred on a Fault known as Laguna Salada that runs on both sides of the border. It and its bigger cousin to the north-the San Andreas Fault, form part of the boundary between two enormous chunks of earth’s crust known as tectonic plates. When those plates bump against each other, they cause earthquakes.
