On our broadcast tonight, incoming more oil hitting shore along the Gulf Coast! And new worries about where it’s headed next! Sounding the alarm before the blowout! What was going on inside BP and what did the Feds know?

Tonight on world news, seeking truth! The White House orders a special commission to probe the oil spill in the Gulf. As we investigate those new reports of progress, how much have they stopped the leak?

Tonight, BP says that giant straw could soon be sucking up as much as half the oil, leaking into  the Gulf! But there is growing concern the spill could spread to Florida and up the east coast! I’m KITTIE CURIC, also tonight, warning sings allegedly ignored that the leak was about to blow. Copy machines that keep a copy putting your identity at risk! CBS broke the story, now the government is getting involved. And a lesion in economics and compassion taught by examples in Steve Hartman’s Assignment of America! From CBS news world headquarters in New York, this is the CBS evening news with KITTIE CURIC!

Good evening everyone, it’s a measure of just how serious the situation in the Gulf has become. President OBAMA is appointing a commission to investigate the oil spill, similar to the panels that studied the Challenger Disaster and a nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. Tonight, BP is finally siphoning some of the oil leaking from that blown-out well, using a mile long pipe. But more than five and a half million gallons of crude have already gushed out! That’s more than half the size of the EXSSON VALDIZ spill! And now there is concern some of it may it hit the Florida’s Keys and travel up the east! KELLY KOBIEYA begins our coverage tonight in Venice Louisiana.

Charter fishing boat captain Chris Kelloway is looking for hope wherever he can find it! “So what is your charter business been like in the past month? That was killed it! I had 24 trips but I’ve ran one!” A $15,000 lost! Like so many along the Gulf Coast, KELLOWAY is hanging his hopes on one small success. BP engineers have stretched a pipe, a mile long and just 4 inches around to the sea floor. After three tries, they connected it to the 21 inch opening where bulk of the oil is leaking and began pumping oil and gas to drilling ship on the surface at a rate of 1000s barrels a day!

If official estimates are right, another 4000 barrels of oil a day is still spilling! And University of Southern Mississippi researchers think they’ve found another potential problem. Huge plumes, they believe to be oil below the surface too many to count, some 100s of feet deep. Federal officials say more testing is needed. The largest cloud, researchers spotted is 10 miles long, 4 miles wide and 300 feet thick.
