This is the CBS Evening News with Bob Schieffer. What else is new? Tiger Woods shot a 69 today to stay in contention 경쟁 in the Players Championship in Florida. This biggest of celebrities 유명인 usually keeps his public words to a bare minimum. But Tiger agreed to talk in an exclusive 독점적인 interview with my 60 Minutes <CBS 방송의 유명한> 시사 프로그램 colleague Ed Bradley. And Ed is here to give us a preview. Ed?
Lesley, Tiger did something with us that this very private man almost never does. He sat down several times to talk and he opened a door into his life. He talked about his obsession 집념 with golf, his relentless 끊임없는 drive 본능적 욕구 to win and about his family. He describes his father, Earl, as his best friend and first coach. And his mother, Kutilda, as the disciplinarian 규율이 엄한 사람.
She used to take away his golf clubs 골프채 until his homework was done. She told us that she also taught him another lesson. Did you experience prejudice 편견 when you came to this country? “Yes. When I take him from the tournament 선수권 대회 to the country club, some of them reject us.” They would reject you? “Yes. Both of us.”
And what did you tell him about? “I said ‘Tiger, it’s their problem, it’s their ignorance. You cannot control other people action or control their mind. You only control your own, and be proud of who you are.’”
So how did you handle that, when somebody would give you that kind of look? They’d say, ‘Hey man, you don’t belong here.’ “My parents always taught me never to waste any energy on that. Just go about your business, put the ball on the fairway tee와 putting green 사이의 잔디밭, put the ball on the green <PUTTING GREEN>, 골프 코스 and try to make a putt.”
Tiger’s father has been ill for about 8 years suffering from prostate cancer 전립선암. He wants to beat Jack Nicolas’s career record of 18.
