There’s a new study today showing some real progress in all of us and our health. More people are getting checked for colon cancer. Nearly two out of three adults aged 50 and older are getting screened regularly, but that means more than 20 million of us still are not. What if there is a smart way to make it happen saving thousands of lives? Here’s Lisa Stark.
It’s a simple fact over half of all deaths from colon cancer could be prevented if adults over 50 got regularly screened. But it just doesn’t happen. So states and cities are getting aggressive. In Utah, they’re bombarding residents with ads. “My dad was 58 years old.” The campaign has boosted colonoscopy장검사 rates from 47% to 68% in just five years.
In Oregon and Washington, it’s nagging계속 잔소리를 하다 automated phone calls. It’s not a political pitch interrupting dinner. It’s this. “Kaiser Permanente recommends regular colon cancer screening.” The calls increased screening rates 30%. In Denver, some doctors offer female patients facials and massages, then the colonoscopy. But the one program getting the most attention in New York City, 18 hospitals literally hand home patients through the colonoscopy process, answer basic questions, remind them about appointments, help them deal with the cost. They are called patient navigators. “Many times it happens that they are afraid and they don’t want to go through the process.”
Without this personal help, only 40% of patients showed up for the colonoscopies. Now 85% do. It’s one of the programs the CDC is now eyeing to figure out what will best motivate Americans to get this lifesaving screening. Lisa Stark, ABC News, Washington.
