On our broadcast tonight, the failure in American education. What some are calling a clear and present danger. Now hear this. New evidence on what electronics are doing to all of us, especially our kids. From NBC News world headquarters in New York, this is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.
Think of all the American presidents in your lifetime who’ve said their goal is a quality education for every American. Well, tonight there’s new evidence this country is falling far short, dangerously short in just the number of Americans graduating from high school. Only 47% of this nation’s black males graduated from high school in the 07, 08 year. Again, that’s just one number. It’s a crisis big enough to trigger real fears of two separate American societies. Those with an education and those without. Our report tonight from our education correspondent Rehema Ellis.
More than half the nation’s black male students will not graduate from high school. Among the worst performing public school districts with large black male populations, New York City and Philadelphia graduated only 28% of black male students in 2008. In Broward County, Florida, the number was 39%. Chicago 44% and Nashville, Tennessee 47%.
Tonight former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich is found guilty of lying to federal agents. I’m Erica Hill. Also tonight, a shootout at a police station. A gunman exchanges fire with officers in suburban Dallas. His motive? A mystery. Our teenagers paying a price for their love of loud music. A major rise in hearing loss. And heads up. Good evening. Katie is on assignment overseas. We begin tonight with late breaking news from Chicago where former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich was convicted today of lying to federal agents. He could get five years in prison for that. But after 14 days of deliberations, the jury could not reach a verdict on 23 other corruption charges. Among them, fraud, conspiracy공모죄, bribery, racketeering부정한 돈벌이,
and attempting to sell US senate seat once held by president Obama.
The judge plans to declare a mistrial심리무효 on those charges, and federal prosecutors declare they intend to try him again.
