There is growing concern following word that North Korea is planning a nuclear test. Today, international diplomats 외교관 will consider what to do. NBC’s chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell has more. Andrea, good morning? Good morning, Natalie? Well, the United Nations Security Council 유엔 안보리 will meet today to discuss this new Korean threat. So far, there is no agreement on how to counter 맞서다 the dangerous regime 정권.

The announcement from Pyongyang came suddenly on official government television. It said US threats compelled 강요하다 North Korea to conduct a nuclear test, calling it essential 없어서는 for self defense. What is Kim Jong Il up to 무슨 짓을 하려는 것인가, ~ 꾀하다? “I think they’re making a strong political statement and saying they’re gonna test. What they’re saying is we’re gonna be a nuclear power. And there maybe and there is no turning back.

Secretary of State 국무장관, Condoleezza Rice, traveling in Cairo issued a stern 단호한, 가차없는 warning. “I think the United States would have to assess 평가하다 what options we have, but I just want to know that would be a very provocative 도발적인 act by the North Koreans.” But what are the administration’s options? Already stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan, the president is trying to avoid 피하다 another military confrontation 대면, hoping, instead, for a diplomatic solution.

“North Korea’s posture 정세, 사태 may bring about 야기하다 the one thing George Bush has been working for and haven’t been able to get, and that is that the international community stands as one against North Korea.” One fear is that if North Korea does conduct its first nuclear test, Japan will then feel compelled to go nuclear, leading to a major escalation 단계적 확대 of nuclear weapons in the region. Natalie? Andrea Mitchell in Washington, thank you, Andrea.
