China says it’s punished more than 17,000 officials this year on corruption charges. The announcement coincides with ~와 일치하다 a major corruption investigation in Shanghai into the misappropriation 남용, 횡령 of large sums 금액 belonging to the city’s pension fund 연금기금. The scandal’s already led to the sacking <구어> 해고, 파면 of the former Communist Party Chief, Chen Yang Zhu and the removal of prominent 유명한, 중요한 business leaders.

 

The BBC’s…Well, I think the communist party is sending a very clear signal that corruption will not be tolerated 묵인하다 in China. In the past few years, official corruption has really soared 급상승하다 and it culminated 최고조에 달하다 in this huge corruption case going on in Shanghai at the moment 현재 which… in which a number of very senior officials have been implicated 연루시키다, including the Shanghai Communist Party boss there.

 

It involves allegations 주장, 진술 that around $400 million was siphoned off <이윤 등을> 흡수하다 from Shanghai’s social security funds and used in illegal investments and loans. So the Communist Party, this is a real major embarrassment 당혹 for the Communist Party that scandal and I think these figures out today, Communist Party really showing that they wanted to get serious about corruption, they want to do something about it.

 

But they face a huge challenge here in China. Corruption is really endemic 풍토병 throughout much of the Communist Party. And this latest scandal in Shanghai, a sign of just how serious the problem is.
