(홍콩) 홍콩 민주화 긴급

Good morning from the CBS News broadcast center in New York City, this is Up to the Minute, I am Anne Marie Green! Tension is growing on the streets of Hong Kong where the pro democracy movement is giving the government until tomorrow to meet their demands for election reform! Wednesday is China's national day. But with 10s of 1000s still in the streets, the fireworks have been cancelled and demonstrators are threatening to expand their protests! They want Hong Kong Chief Executive to resign and they are demanding to pick their own candidates for elections in 2017. The United States is facing a delicate balancing act to growing unrest in Hong Kong! On the one hand, the White House wants to support the prodemocracy movement, on the other, it wants to avoid a potential standoff with China, a world power with strong economic ties to the US! Tens of 1000s of protesters, many of them students, have been demonstrating for several days. They want the right to choose their own leadership without interference from Beijing, Seth Done reports. Pro democracy protests keep growing with demonstrators holding their ground against the heavy handed tactics of riot police. They are jamming the streets of Hong Kong forcing some schools and offices to close! Demonstrators are pushing for the direct election of Hong Kong chief executive in 2017. They want to be able to pick who is on the ballot! But China's communist government has refused! Since Hong Kong's handover from British to Chinese rule in 1997, it has been governed by an unusual agreement called one country two systems. It allows Hong Kong some independence from China! But demonstrators are chafing now at those limits! Many are young people who used umbrellas to protect themselves from pepper spray, prompting a nickname the Umbrella Revolution! With the unprecedented size of the demonstrations, many reminded of another uprising in China 25 years ago. Tennanmun Square! That's not appreciated by Beijing where the protests have received little attention in state run press and have been blocked on China's social media! Seth Don CBS News Beijing!
