Good morning to our viewers in the West it is Monday May 18, 2015. Welcome to CBS this morning. A daring base jump in Yosemite claims the lives of 2 extreme athletes. What went wrong? This morning, let's get a look at into what went wrong for 2 extreme jumpers in Yosemite National Park. They attempted their daring wing suit jump from more than a mile high. The park's Taft Point. Vladimir Duthier of our digital network CBSIN shows us the dangers of the sport. Vad, good morning.
Good morning Dim Potter lost his life on Saturday along with fellow base jumper Gram Hunt in a daring stunt that they performed many times before. 43 year old Dim Potter was one of the best the world at what he did. And what he did was extreme. Potter groundbreaking base jumper, climber and high liner, a form of tight rope walking between cliffs. But something went wrong Saturday night shortly after Potter and 29 year old Gram Hunt left off Taft Point. A massive 7500 foot rock jutting into the heart of Yosemite Valley. The two men who were attempting a wing suit flight were never heard from again. Park search and rescue crews recovered both bodies about 50 yards apart on Sunday. "At this time, we don't have any evidence that the parachutes were deployed, but clearly something didn’t go right and both of them had impacted to the rock"
Base jumping is illegal in Yosemite and it's dangerous business. In 2013, 60 minutes correspondent Steve Croft spoke to a group of wing suit enthusiasts about the dangers of their sport. "Do you think about it? I mean when you are up there on the top of the mountain, you're getting ready to go and shake hands and say…. Do you think about the possibility? We don't think like… I might not see you again, better say, better say, Good Bye, give a kiss… That never enters your mind? Come on! If you do crash when you're flying a wing suit, you’re gonna die. Nobody live thru that. You're just going too fast" Potter was known for pushing the limits of an already extreme life style, often navigating rocks and rope suspensions. Last year Potte's friend and climbing partner 38 year old Shawn Larry was killed in a similar accident in the mountain of Zion National Park in Utah. Nora.
