Meat lovers in South Korea may get their first taste of American beef later this month. The first shipment 화물, 선적 arrives this week. South Korea used to be the third largest overseas market for US beef before a ban 금지 in 2003 over fears of Mad Cow Disease 광우병. But rigorous 엄격한 new rules may make it harder for Koreans to get a bite of ~을 한입 먹다 American steak as the BBC’s Juliana Liu reports.
The label says, Proudly Produced in the USA. This is the first shipment of American beef to South Korea in nearly 3 years and a lot is riding on it. Creekstone Farms of Kansas State sent over 9 tons of chilled beef 냉장 쇠고기. Experts will be checking to see if it’s safe to eat. “We will check if the beef is tainted with ~로 더러워지다, 감염되다 risky materials or antibiotics 항생물질. We will allow open imports if the beef is satisfactory to standards. But if there is something wrong, we will disqualify it and discard 버리다, 처분하다 it.”
And a lot of money is at stake 관련이 되어. Before the 2003 ban, American beef accounted for ~을 차지하다 two thirds of Korean beef imports. It was a market worth $850 million a year. Now the business has slowed to a trickle 눈곱만큼으로 줄어들다 and Koreans are eating beef from other countries.
Tough new rules may make it harder for Koreans who do enjoy American beef. To reduce the risk of Mad Cow Disease, Seoul says only meat from cows under 3-years-olds will be allowed. And no risky parts like bones. Not even pieces of bones.
Trade tension 긴장상태 on exactly this issue is growing. Here, a group of activists are protesting against a free trade deal being negotiated between Seoul and Washington. They believe an agreement would force unwanted beef into South Korea. American beef may soon be sold in the country. But issues surrounding its import may continue to drive a wedge between <문제 등이 둘 사이를> 이간시키다 trade negotiators. Juliana Liu, BBC News.
