I want to tell you now about this waiting game at the South Pole where two planes are attempting to evacuate at least one sick crew member at a research facility. NBC’s KIER SIMMONS has the latest on that. KIER, good morning to you. Hey Matt, good morning. This morning, this small team has arrived at this base in Antarctica. We are told this morning, they have refueled, they are ready to fly. But Matt, don’t be misled by this picture. We are about to show you webcam images of what this base is like right now of the bleak conditions this team is facing.
A perilous 10 hour flights in extreme cold lies ahead. And this gloomy webcam image shows the rescuer’s current base, rather a station. Right now Antarctica’s polar night, 6 months long. The team will be flying in virtual darkness. A tiny twin otter plane carrying just a pilot, copilot, engineer and medic. If they are able to reach the National Science Foundation South Pole Station, they will land in the dark on skis, evacuating the sick unnamed worker and flying back another 1,500 miles.
If they don’t make it, a second plane will launch a search and rescue operation. “The weather down in Antarctic can change quickly , so you know, you are sort of fighting against some of that unknown down there” Polar explorer ENGELSOL HEIM traces the dangerous route. He says the pilots know the risks. “These pilots and the crew are the best in the world to mitigate that risk. They have accepted this. They would not do this if they didn’t think that they could make it safely” This morning, they are set to take off, waiting for a break in the harsh weather, a race against time to the bottom of the earth. And the check you on the weather online suggests, maybe, maybe, in the next few days, there will be an opportunity for them to take off, Matt, but underscore the weather where they are going, it’s 17 degrees below. Yeah, it’s very difficult situation, Kier thank you very much.
