In just 2 hours time, Americans will begin voting in crucial 결정적인, 중대한 midterm elections. The outcome 결과 could have a dramatic effect on President Bush’s remaining 2 years in office.

Both Houses of Congress 상원과 하원, <the Senate and the House of Representative> decide the laws of the land. The Senate 상원 has 100 seats, 2 for each state. The Republicans 공화당원 now have 55 and the Democrats 민주당원 44. There’s also 1 Independent 무소속의 senator, Jim Jeffords. He’s retiring at this election. And there are 17 Democrat and 15 Republican seats up for grabs 아무 입수 있는 this time. The Democrats need just 6 gains to take control.

In the House of Representatives 하원, the Republicans have had control for more than 10 years. All 435 seats are up for election, although only 431 are currently filled, 4 people have resigned 사임하다 since the last election. The Democrats need to pick up 15 to gain control.

Well, with just 2 hours to go before the polls 투표소 open, our correspondent in Washington is James Westhead. Um the Republicans have this much vaunted 자랑하다 72-hour system where they blitz 전격적으로 움직이다 their own voters, their own supporters and kept them to the polls. The Democrats have been trying to do something very similar this year and, I think, are more motivated 자극받은, 의욕 than they’ve been in, in any time in recent, in the recent past.

So it’s…… it’s a real battle to the wire 끝까지, 최후까지, <wire> 결승선을 의미함 between the two parties and it is all about turnout 투표<>. You got to remember that the midterm elections traditionally are very low turnout, so if either party in a in a particular seat can get their, um, get 50% of their supporters out to vote, then that’s enough to tip the balance 결과에 결정적인 영향을 주다.
