Iraq: What Next?

 

Good evening? You can call it anarchy 혼란, 무정부상태, you can call it chaos 대혼란, you can call it civil war. Whatever you call it, the events of recent days demonstrate that the situation in Iraq is at a critical juncture 중대한 시점. And the White House is responding with a flurry of 연속적인, 빗발치는 diplomatic activity. The President going to Jordan. The Vice President to Saudi Arabia. All in anticipation of ~을 예상<기대>하고 coming recommendations from the Independent Iraq Study Group 이라크 연구회 that is expected to call for a regional approach to the Iraq situation, a regional approach to include even enemies of the US. We start tonight with our chief White House correspondent Martha Raddatz. Martha?

The Iraq Study Group was meeting all day in Washington today while the White House acknowledged that Iraq is “in a new phase and new solutions are urgently 긴급히 needed.” With Iraq continuing its descent into civil war after a wave of deadly sectarian 분파의, 종파의 violence. The White House officials said that things are not “proceeding <일이> 진척되다 well or going fast enough in Iraq and that the US must find ways to “adapt 적응하다.” The White House also announced that when President Bush meets with Iraq’s Prime Minister in Jordan later week, the two will discuss possible talks between Iran and Iraq to quell <반란 등을> 진압하다 the violence. Talks in which the US would not be involved.

 

But officials tell ABC News that one of the central recommendation from the Iraq Study Group will be that the US engage in ~을 시작하다, ~에 참가하다 talks with both Iran and Syria to, one, help stem ~을 저지하다, 막다 the flow 유입 of foreign fighters and, two, stop the more lethal 치명적인 bombs from entering Iraq. “The reason why Syria or Iran might want to cooperate with us is because this gives them stature 달성, 위업. It gives them power in the region. In effect, they would be operating with America as equals 필적하는 것.”

 

An administration official says it is unlikely that President Bush will accept that recommendation, but that there are two other recommendations the President would look at favorably 호의적으로. Two, give the Iraqi government a strong message that the US military support will not go on indefinitely 무기한으로.
