후세인, 사형선고 확정

Iraq’s highest appeals court 항소법원 has upheld the death sentence for the Iraqi dictator and order that he be hanged within 30 days. The ruling means Hussein could be sent to the gallows <보통 단수취급> 교수대 any day now, even as soon as tomorrow. We begin with our Baghdad correspondent Terry McCarthy.

The clock is ticking for Saddam Hussein. Seven weeks after he was found guilty of mass murder, chief judge 수석 판사, 하급 법원장 Aref Shahin announced tonight that Saddam’s execution is near. Starting tomorrow, said the judge, any day could be the day. In Iraq tonight, people were happy, at least in Shiite districts. Saddam was sentenced for ordering the death of 148 Shiites in the town of Dujail in 1982 after an assassination 암살 attempt against him.

His chief lawyer told ABC News tonight that there is nothing more the defense 피고측 can do. This woman who didn’t want us to show her face is a doctor in Baghdad. Her job is to cure people, but Saddam killed her husband and 12 other family members and so she has volunteered to be the executioner 사형 집행인. “He is not a human being. Even, even a monster is better than him.” This man lost nine relatives. I prayed to god, he says, that I will be the one who will execute 처형하다 Saddam Hussein.

When it does happen, however, the government says it is determined to avoid reprisals 보복 against the executioner. “Security would be an issue. Want to make sure this person will never be known.” And so Saddam’s hanging man just like so many of his victims in mass graves will never have a name.
