영국 해리 왕자 이라크전 배치예정

This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Prince Harry, third in line for the throne 왕위계승 서열3 and designated 지정된 royal rogue <귀여운 으로> 장난꾸러기, always said he didn’t join the army to play toy soldiers 장난감 병정. That when the time came for his regiment 연대 to serve, he’d go with his men. That time may be now.

The announcement that Harry’s regiment might go to Iraq is expected next week. Second Lieutenant 소위 Wales as he’s known commands 지휘하다 a reconnaissance 정찰, 수색 unit 부대 trained to work right at the front line 최전선. When they’re not assigned 명하다, 임명하다 to ceremonial 의식의, 의식적인 duties, so admired by tourists around London’s palaces.

Prince Harry has always insisted that he wasn’t merely 다만 ~뿐인 interested in the ceremonial duties of his regiment and there’s the tradition going back centuries here of royals leading their troops into battle. But this is Iraq they’re talking about. A war that’s as controversial here as it is in the US.

The British have been fighting an increasingly bloody 잔혹한 battle in southern Iraq and have endured a mounting 상승하는 casualty toll 사상자수 as well. If he goes, Harry would be a prime target. “Here’s the dilemma 진퇴양난. Prince Harry deploys to the front line. He becomes a target. By becoming a target, he also drags in 질질 끌어넣다 those people around him into greater danger.”

There may be some propaganda 선전, 선전운동 value for the British war effort in deploying a prince, but there’s a propaganda potential for the enemy, too, if he’s hurt or worse. “Well, of course, it would be a propaganda victory. Huge. Huge. Enormous.”

Royal military heroes have taken risks 위험을 무릅쓰다 and been immortalized 불멸하게 하다 in the past. But the battle lines seemed to be clear when Henry V fought. Prince Harry may be heading into the breach 불화, 침해 of a much more complicated war. Mark Phillips, CBS News, London.
