Good evening. The war that started with the sharp 예리한, 선명한, blinding 눈을 부시게 하는 impact of precision-guided weapons 정밀유도 무기 hitting their targets in Baghdad in the middle of the night has now gone on for four years. The 5th year of combat in Iraq starts now. US involvement in this war is now longer in duration 전쟁지속기간 than the Korean War. Longer than WWI or WWII.

 

And here are the numbers of great importance to all Americans. So far, at least 3,218 Americans have died. At least 24,000 have been wounded. Earlier on this anniversary day, before a live national television audience, the president talked about the fight so far and the stakes 이해관계 ahead. We begin here tonight with NBC’s David Gregory at the White House. David, good evening.

 

Brian, the President once again today pleaded for 간청하다 the public’s patience on the war and demanded of Congress both the money and the flexibility 융통성 to see his war strategy through ~ 이해하다, <남을> 끝까지 도와주다.

 

At the White House this morning, the President’s words were measured, a far cry from ~과는 전혀 다른 the certainty with which he launched 시작하다, 착수하다 the invasion of Iraq. “4 years after this war began, the fight is difficult. But it can be won. It’ll be won if we have the courage and resolve 결단, 결의 to see it through ~ 해내다.”
