주식을 하려면? <Winners and Losers>

This is World News Tonight, brought to you by Hyundai Sonata. Imagine that this guy, yes, you. Let’s say that you are a typical investor 투자자 and you have just invested in 1, 2, 3, 4, different companies. So you have 4 different shares , 주식 of stock. Okay. And after a year, you discover that two of them have gone up at winners and the other two have gone down, they’re losers okay?

Now, let’s say your doctor hands you a very large doctor bill 진찰료, 약값. Uh-oh. To pay that bill, you gotta sell some shares, so which do you sell? These stocks that made money or the stocks that lost money? If you are typical, says finance professor Terry Odian. “You’re about 1.5 to 2 times as likely to sell one of the winners.”

Because, first of all, it feels better. “Exactly. You feel good about it. This was a success.” and second, emotionally it’s hard to sell a losing stock because when you do, says Professor Odian, “you’re gonna feel regret 후회, 서운함. When you sell the losers, you’re going to realize I bought something, it went down, I sold it for a loss, I’ve made a mistake, I feel bad about that.”

Very bad. So, instead, what most people do is they hold on to ~ 처분하지 않고 지키다 their losers and they’re thinking, well, they’ll come back, I’m gonna wait. You’ll see. So then the next year, you buy a new set of shares. And let’s say again, there’re 2 winners and 2 losers. And now, you gotta pay a tuition bill 수업료. So.. “You sell more of your winners.”

For the same reasons, so now you’re carrying 4 losers and now you buy more stocks again, some winners, some losers, and when it’s time to buy a car, again you sell the winners? “Most likely.” Professor Odian surveyed 조사하다 10,000 investors over 7 years and discovered that by 2 to 1, investors consistently sold their winning stocks and held on to their losers. So that after a while, they ended up with a portfolio lopsided 한쪽으로 기울어진 with losers.

This is hardly the way to make money. Rational 합리적인 investors should sell their losers. “Absolutely.” But people don’t. They won’t. Because they don’t like to lose. We’re not natural born 타고난 investors.” Apparently ~ 같은 not. Robert Krulwich, ABC News, New York.
