옐친 전 러시아 대통령 타계
Well, the man at the center of perhaps the most dramatic political transformation 변형 in modern history has died at the age of 76. Former Russian President Boris Yeltsin came to power 권력을 잡게 되다 as the Soviet Union was breathing its last breath. He was Russia’s first freely elected President and ruled during a time of dizzying 현기증이 날 것 같은 and turbulent 격한, 불온한 change. ABC’s John Durban covered 보도하다 Yeltsin’s rise to power when he was our Moscow correspondent.
For about a 5-year period in the 1990s, images of Boris Yeltsin never stopped coming, but they seemed to tell two completely different stories. When an army was sent to Moscow to turn back the clock 역행하다, 진보를 방해하다 on democracy to crush 궤멸시키다, 꺾다 reform, Yeltsin put his own body in the way of ~의 방해가 되어 the guns. Yeltsin got up on a tank. It gave the crowd someone to follow. It shamed ~에게 부끄러움을 느끼게 하여 ~못하게 하다 the troops into switching sides. It changed history. A pivot point 중심점 in the collapse 붕괴 of the Soviet Empire.
It made Yeltsin, within months, the President of Russia that at least for a while could be called democratic. He was a guest at the western table. A man Americans called an ally 동맹자. And his own people loved him. So goes the first story.
And as the images from the 90s also told us, he was frequently embarrassingly 당혹스럽게 inappropriate 어울리지 않는 or just drunk, the insiders 체제 내의 사람들 said, at home 본국에서 and abroad, this was in Germany and having launched ~에 착수하다 the war against Chechnya that Russia could not win. And a lot of group of corrupt 부패한 cronies <경멸적> 측근, 패거리 to steal the nation’s wealth while millions fought poverty 가난. One whom his own people were happy to see he step down 사직하다.
