언론의 자유를 막는 중국

 

Google’s chief executive 사장 was in China today promoting a new venture called Googer, a Chinese version of the enormously popular search engine. There’s a rush 급격한 증가 of Internet companies entering China and there is a price of doing business there.

 

China has 110 million Internet users, but it is still not an open society. Some Internet companies are facing fierce 맹렬한, 거센 criticism for the compromises 타협 they made in order to operate there. Yahoo most recently was confronted 직면하다, 맞서다 by activists. ABC’s Jake Tapper takes a closer look.

 

Reporters Without Borders 국경 없는 기자회 came to Yahoo Silicon Valley headquarters 본사 to show the company what its cooperation with the Chinese government really means. Your company is the reason that all of this has happened.

 

Also imprisoned 수감하다, 구속하다, journalist Chi Tao, for writing about Chinese press censorship 검열<제도>. His lawyer says Yahoo helped the government trace 추적하다 emails to his computer and warns there are more cases. Yahoo did not only give information about Chi Tao, it has done the same to many others.

 

At a recent hearing on this issue, Congressman 국회의원 Tom Lantos, a survivor of the Holocaust 유대인 대학살, accused 비난하다 the company of complicity 공모, 연루 in human rights violations. “Your abhorrent 싫어서 견딜 없는, 모순되는 activities in China are a disgrace 불명예, 치욕. I can ask it 10 more times if you refuse to answer it. You are under oath <법정에서> 선서하고. Have you reached out to the families? We have not reached out to the families. That was my question.”

 

Yahoo would not comment on ~ 대해 언급하다 these latest charges 문책, 비난 to ABC News. But its general response like other Internet companies that do business in China has been that it has to comply with <요구·규칙> 따르다 local 현지의 laws in order to work in the burgeoning 급성장하는 Chinese market.

 

But Reporters Without Borders challenges 이의 제기하다 that argument and the company threatened to remove them from their campus. “You can either exit the campus or we’re gonna have to call the police department.” “Then call the police.” “Okay” A company executive eventually agreed to meet with the group.
