Deputy attorney general 법무차관 Paul McNulty is the highest ranking official to step down 사임하다 in the fallout over the firings of several US attorneys. His resignation will be effective late this summer. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales who admits the firings were poorly handled says he will not be stepping down.

 

The Coca-Cola Company is offering a settlement 해결, 화해 over claims its ingredients 성분, 원료 in two of its soft drinks form the cancer causing chemical benzene. The company will give replacement drinks to anyone who bought Fanta Pineapple or Malt Zero before September 2006. Coca-Cola which denies the allegations 주장 also agrees to pony up ~을 결제하다 $500 to each of four plaintiffs 원고 and also to pay their legal fees.

 

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has made a huge contribution 기부 to a reward 보답 fund for missing British girl. 4-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared in Portugal nearly 2 weeks ago after her parents left her and her younger siblings alone and went to dinner. Even though Rowling wants the amount kept secret, it’s reportedly more than $495,000. The reward had already reached $3 million before Rowling’s contribution.

 

And no, you’re not imagining things. Gas prices are extremely high. In fact, they’re higher now than right after Hurricane Katrina hit. AAA says the national average for regular unleaded is $3.07 a gallon. That is a $.24 jump in just the last month.

 

The White House wants to cut back just how much gas we use in this country and how much pollution our vehicles put in the air. President Bush announced Monday he’s ordering three agencies to write new rules to do just that within the next ten years. The Supreme Court is pressuring the administration 행정부 to regulate carbon emissions 이산화 탄소 배출 from cars and trucks.
