Now to the west of here across the Pacific in Japan. A powerful earthquake has caused death, injury 부상, 손상 and massive destruction 파괴 and raise fears of radiation contamination 방사능 오염 tonight. The quake struck the northwestern part of the country triggering 일으키다 a fire at the world’s largest nuclear power plant 핵발전소 about 160 miles from Tokyo and causing a reactor to spill ~ 흘리다 radioactive water into the sea. This quake killed at least 9 people and injured 900 more. From Asia tonight, NBC’s Mark Mullen reports on the damage and safety fears.

 

Cameras captured the moment the 6.8 earthquake ripped into 덮치다 northwest Japan at 10:16 AM. But it was the scene from the air which best told the damage. The quake strong enough to buckle ~ 구부리다, 뒤틀다 highways and bridges, derail <열차를> 탈선시키다 a train, and level 무너뜨리다 hundreds of homes. My house was totally destroyed and the only thing I could think of was escaping and taking my children to safety.

 

But the biggest cause for concern, the quake set off 유발하다 a fire at the world’s biggest nuclear power plant and triggered 일으키다 a leak of radioactive water. Though the public wasn’t informed for hours, officials released the contaminated water into the ocean, intending it posed no risk to people or the environment. Tonight, as many as 10,000 residents remain away from their homes as the search for more victims continues. Mark Mullen, NBC News, Beijing.
