Good evening. It could’ve happened anywhere commercial airliners take off and land. It happened in the biggest city in South America. And now it’s the worst air disaster 재앙 in Brazil’s history. Tonight, 200 people are believed dead after an airbus 320 slid off a short runway in the rain at the airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

 

Officials don’t think anyone made it off that aircraft alive and all these deaths are now a part of a big issue in aviation 항공, 비행. And again not just in South America. It’s where we’ll begin the broadcast tonight. NBC’s Tom Costello was on the story. Tom, good evening.

 

Brian? Pilots have long said the runways at this airport are too slippery 미끄러운. Brazilian judge tried to close this runway earlier this year. And just Monday, two smaller planes slipped right off. Now, a real tragedy 비극 in Sao Paulo.

 

On a busy street in Sao Paulo, 200 people dead caught in an inferno 지옥 같은 , 대화재 as TAM air flight 340 came to a fiery end. For families gathered nearby, anguish 비통. Now early blame on a runway long criticized for being too short. Witnesses 목격자 say the pilot tried to avert 피하다 the landing, lifting off over a fence before crashing into a gas station and a cargo building.

 

On YouTube today, home video of another A320 flying into the heart of Sao Paulo and the same runway just 6300 feet long. By contrast, New York’s LaGuardia runway is 7000 feet long and extra 700 feet to land the same plane. Pilots say Sao Paulo can be a challenging landing.
