LA 심각한 가뭄 피해


From NBC News, this is TODAY with Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira, live from studio 1A in Rockefeller Plaza. Farmer Mike Boris of Hemet, California auctioning off 경매하다 his equipment 장비 and ending a family tradition. Boris whose grandfather started this farm 85 years ago is calling it quits <구어> 끝내다. There isn’t enough rainfall 강수량, 강우량 to grow crops 작물 and he can’t afford to irrigate ~ 물을 끌어들이다. “Last year, we harvested only half a crop. And this year we did not even plant.”

 

California and the west as well as portions of the southeast are suffering through severe 심한 and extreme drought. So, just how bad is it? The most parched 바짝 마른 place in California, Death Valley gets about two and a half inches of rain in the average year. Compare that to the rapidly growing city of Riverside, 30 miles north of Mike Boris’s farm. Here’s they’ve gotten 1.93 inches of rain in the past 12 months, making Riverside drier than Death Valley.

 

Today, Governor 주지사 Arnold Schwarzenegger warned the state is on the brink of ~하기 직전에 disaster. This could go on for a long time, warns UCLA geography professor Glen McDonald. “We’re pretty concerned that things are conspiring <나쁜 > 꾸미다 to give us a perfect drought out here lasting 지속하다 not years, but maybe decades.”

 

Growth rings on trees shows evidence of ancient mega droughts lasting over half a century. “Obviously drought period’s here.” Professor McDonald says climate change makes it worse. “Global warming will really raise 제기하다, 일으키다 the odds 가능성 of severe drought in California and the southwest.” Meaning that more farmers like Mike Boris will be forced to sell out.
