Come to Seoul and shake up your soul. Seoul, soul of Asia.

한국인 피랍 사건

Efforts to negotiate 협상하다 for 21 South Korean hostages 인질 in Afghanistan are inching forward. The governor 주지사 of one Afghan province is trying to set up ~ 제의하다, 제시하다 direct talks between South Korea and the Taliban. Son JiAe is in Seoul. She joins us now via broadband <통신> 광대역. And, Jiae, some of the latest reports that are coming out now are indicating ~ 나타내다, 암시하다 that the South Korean government has spoken to the Taliban and even saying that there are limits to what they can do, what the South Korean government can do, pretty much highlighting 강조하다 the frustration 좌절 that Seoul is feeling right now.

The South Korean government spokesman 대변인, just a short while ago, in his daily briefing with the reporters said that the ultimate goal 궁극적인 목표 in meeting with the Taliban would be to emphasize the fact that South Korean government is limited in meeting the Taliban demands that its prisoners be released 석방하다 from Afghan jails.

And now the South Korean government is saying that although they do not know of any other demands by the Taliban. They are, they are, at this point, open to negotiation to talks with the Taliban and they don’t want to, at this point, limit themselves in any type of demands that the Taliban might be making in the future. Now, we do know there had been some word on the pullout <군대 등의> 철수 of the South Korean, 200 South Korean troops in Afghanistan.

Jiae, there are some reports that indicate that Seoul is now trying to talk to the United States and put some pressure on the US to do something. Right now, the US is just saying, they’re keeping in contact with Seoul, but not really having a direct hand in any sort of talks.

That is, that is the case 사실은 그렇다. And that is why in South Korea, you see many of the South Koreans protesting in small groups in front of the US embassy 대사관. Many of them, there have been pastors 목사 who’d been offering up prayers for the safety of the hostages. Um, and they do so in front of the US embassy because one of the things that they feel is that the United States could be doing more that the US has influence on the Afghan government and that the US’s policy of not negotiating with terrorists might be one of the major hindrances 장애 in negotiating with the Taliban.
