남북, 평양서 2 정상 회담 합의

The leaders of North and South Korea are to meet in the North’s capital Pyongyang at the end of this month for what will be only their second-ever summit 정상회담. The first one, seven years ago, ushered 예고하다 in a period of unprecedented 전례가 없는 cooperation. Both Japan and the US welcomed the announcement, as did Beijing, saying it would help ease 완화시키다 tensions 긴장, 불안 on the peninsula. Beijing said it hoped the meeting would have positive results.

Showing off 자랑해 보이다 its military might, parades like this one are common in North Korea. The North and South are still technically 엄밀히 말하자면 at war. They never signed a peace treaty 조약, 협정 after the conflict 충돌, 분쟁 on the Korean peninsula in the 1950s. So summits like the one just announced don’t happen very often.

This was the last one, more than seven years ago. A meeting between then President Kim Dae Joong and the North Korean leader Kim Jong Il. Those talks led to reduced tensions and greater cooperation between the two sides. Any progress like that would be a boost 후원, 격려 for the South Korean President, Noh Moo Hyun. He’s coming to the end of an unpopular term 임기 in office 재직, 정권을 잡고 있는. A successful summit would help secure his legacy 이어 받은 and improve the chance of his party’s candidate 후보, 입후보자 in the presidential elections later this year.

The meeting will also add to ongoing efforts to ensure North Korea abides by 지키다 the commitment 언질, 공약 it made earlier this year to give up its nuclear weapons in return for ~ 답례로 aid 원조 and security guarantees from the international community. That has been a long and complicated process. Keeping it on track is now the major challenge.

So President Noh finally has the summit he’s been pushing for ~ 자꾸 요구하다 throughout his time in office. The big challenge now, though, is making sure this meeting achieves real results. Daniel Griffith, BBC News, Seoul.
