Scenes of desperation 절망. Greeks using anything they can to protect lives and homes. At least 85 separate fires were burning across Greece today. One even threatening ruins at the birthplace 발상지, 근원 of the Olympics. A parched 바싹 마른 summer helps spark 야기하다 some of the fires, but already over 30 people have been arrested on suspicion of arson 방화.

 

The fires are the worst in living memory. Dozens of villages have been cut off 봉쇄하다. Despite the flames, helicopters have managed to rescue some of those trapped 갇히다. But at least, 63 people have died, including a woman found in her burned-out 타버린 car, still clasping 껴안다 her four children. All dead. Today, her home was the only one in her village untouched by flames.

 

So bad that the Greek government has declared a state of emergency. And three days of mourning 비탄. But already there’s growing anger. This woman shouting at fire fighters that the response was too slow. Help is on the way. 17 nations are sending fire fighters and equipment.
