크리스마스 쇼핑 시즌

If you took a walk today, say around this building in Midtown, Manhattan, you could hear virtually any accent, virtually every language being spoken. And many of these visitors are here to spend money. Today, the United States dollar reached a new low. And that has given Europeans and other tourists big buying power here in the US. They are coming here in big numbers. Our report on this tonight from NBC’s Stephanie Gosk.

On London’s Regents Street, Christmas is in the air. Inside Herrod’s department store, the aisles are decked with 장식하다, 꾸미다 holiday spirit and shoppers. But what you don’t see are many Americans. What do you think of the price of things in London? “You want us to be honest?” “Oh, yeah” “Prices, honest, they’re high.

Not just high, but stunning 아연하게 하는 because the dollar is so low. Today, it took $1.48 to buy one Euro, a record low. And over $2 to buy a British pound. Alright now, and how much is this bag?” “It’s 795.” “795?$1,630. But that same Marc Jacobs bag in New York, $280 cheaper. The same for Nikes. $50 cheaper. And $760 less for a Mac laptop.

So Britains and Europeans are flocking 떼지어 오다 to the US just to go shopping. Airlines like Virgin actually advertise 3-day shopping blitzes 전격 공격, 급습 in cities like New York and Boston. Bring an empty suitcase, they say, and you’ll fill it. On New York’s 5th Avenue, the Christmas windows are festive 축제의, 즐거운. The Rockefeller Center tree is going up. And the sound you hear, European bargain hunters 염가품 찾아다니는 사람.

And shopping is the mission, not sightseeing. Some come all the way here to then take an hour bus ride to a suburban outlet mall for bargains. “Handbags, shoes, loads of shoes.” Makeila Thomas found a pair of heels. “I’m probably saving about 200 pounds. So about $400.” And a pound saved here is a dollar earned for the US economy. Stephanie Gosk, NBC News, London.
