미국, 폭설로 극심한 교통상황

Good morning. It’s Monday, December 17, from CBS News in New York City. I’m Meg Oliver. Powerful winds and freezing 몹시 추운 rain and snow have battered 강타하다 much of the US prompting 촉구하다 officials in some states to recommend, just stay home. Deadly 치명적인 traffic accidents, airport delays and damaged homes are all blamed on severe weather stretching from the Great Lakes to New England.

More snow is expected in a number of states and a winter storm and wind warnings remain in effect through this morning. Hundreds of schools have cancelled classes today. CBS’s Wendy Gillette reports.

Great weather. We’ve got a blizzard 심한 눈보라. Blowing snow nearly obscured 덮다 the field that Cleveland Brown Stadium Sunday where Santa made an appearance and players fell down as they tried to make a first down. In Massachusetts, the Patriots warmed Gillette Stadium with video of a roaring 활발한 fire on the scoreboard 득점 게시판. But nothing could take away the chill 추위 for the legion of 다수의 shovelers trying to clear seats.

From Chicago to New York and everywhere in between, most people’s day-off vanished 사라지다 as a mix of snow, sleet 진눈깨비, and ice blanketed ~ 온통 덮다 their homes. “Had to shovel 삽질하다 a path from the door to the car. Clean the car off. And then drive here and shovel some snow here.” The deadly storm caused tens of thousands to lose power and sent cars sliding off roads. “You gotta go really, really slow.”

The conditions led to one tragic accident near Indianapolis. A mother and her three daughters died when their car slid on an ice road into a pond. Traffic accidents also killed three people in Michigan and Wisconsin. Here in New York City, the roads were in good shape following hours of rain. Only a few clumps 덩어리 of snow still dotted <장소> 점재하다 the streets. But, traveling by air was a very different story.

Some reported delays of up to 16 hours at LaGuardia Airport. “We’re from Australia, so we’ve never had anything like this happen.” The weather cancelled hundreds of flights across the country prompting everyone to offer the same advice. “If you can stay home, stay home, don’t come out.” all that slush and snow is expected to freeze overnight making for a messy 뒤범벅의 morning rush hour. In New York, Wendy Gillette, for CBS News.
