스키장의 불청객, 눈사태

From NBC News, this is a special edition of TODAY with Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira.
It was bad enough Sunday when rescuers found the bodies of 2 skiers buried in an avalanche 눈사태 near White Fish resort in Montana. One, Anthony Coleman was a 19-year-old skier and skateboarder. “He died doing his passion. He’s in a better place now. He’s able to ski and skate as much as he wants. Doesn’t have to worry about anything.”

But then came word that witnesses 목격하다 saw at least 2 more skiers swept away 휩쓸어 가다 by the same avalanche. Though who the skiers were and where they were buried 묻히다 remains a mystery. “We have no way to pick them up other than dog searches, what they can smell and doing field searches.”

This winter’s avalanche season has been one of the deadliest 가장 치명적인 on record. Already, at least 22 people have died in Montana, Washington, Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. And the season is far from over. “We’ve had a lot of fatalities 사망자<> and close calls 위기일발, 구사일생 lately because the west has just been pounded 난타<연타>하다 with a number of storms.”

Across the west, avalanche crews have been triggering 일으키다 avalanches in an effort to clear unstable slopes 비탈, 경사지 and make them safer. But many back country areas receive little attention. And many of this year’s slides 눈사태 have been triggered by skiers away from groomed 손질한, 가다듬은 slopes.

Experts warn people venturing into the back country 시골, 벽지 needs special radio beacons to make it easier to find them quickly in the case of a slide. But mostly, people need the very latest snow information and a healthy dose of caution. For TODAY, John Larson, NBC News, Los Angeles.
