Tonight, on the trail of ~ 추적하여 the killer. Scientists find something in our genes that could make some people more likely to get hooked on ~ 빠지다, 탐닉하다 cigarettes and die of lung cancer 폐암. And how much water should we drink to stay healthy? A long held recommendation may be going down the drain 수포로 돌아가다. This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.

정유회사들의 폭리 고발

From Chicago where they snarled traffic 교통을 마비시키다 to New Jersey and Atlanta where they parked their big rigs <구어>버스, 트럭, independent truckers around the country today protested the sky-high price of fuel. “It cost me $900 a fill-up on my truck. That’s every day and a half.”

Anger that also bubbled up 들끓다 today in Congress. “What are we giving you a tax break 세금우대 of $107 billion for?” Where executives <기업의> 경영진, 중역 of the big five oil companies, Exxon, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Shell and BP were summoned ~ 소환하다 for a grilling 심문, 규문 on the soaring 상승하는 price of gas. “Your approval ratings are lower than ours. That, that means you’re down low.”

“With your record high profits. Have you thought of lowering the price of gasoline?” after an awkward 난처한, 거북한 pause, an aggressive defense of market economics. “Lowering our prices happens in many markets based upon local supply and demand. The prices go up, the prices go down. These prices are set at the street level.”

And it’s not their fault. They argued that prices now only seem to go up. The real villain 악한, 장본인 they said is the high price of crude oil over which they have no control. And which has recently soared to more than $100 a barrel. And the reason their profits are so big, they said, is because their companies are so big.

This is the third time in less than three years that big oil executives have been hauled 소환하다 before Congress to be grilled about the price of gas. The other two times, the price continued to go up. Members of Congress can see there’s no reason to believe this time will be any different. Katie?
