This is World News with Charles Gibson brought to you by Hyundai. The images of the hungry in Haiti storming 돌격하다 the presidential palace this week. The UN says the riots 폭동 should serve as a warning that the soaring 급상승하는 cost of food is fueling 부채질하다, 자극하다 anger and desperation 절망.

 

Rice worldwide up 147% in just one year. Grain, up 47%. Dairy, 80%. In Africa, police in Senegal use tear gas to break up protests over skyrocketing 급등하는 prices. And in Egypt, riots over the cost of bread.

 

Our reporter’s in Africa. Nearly 30 million Egyptians live on less than $2 a day. And after the cost of cooking oil and rice doubled in recent months, government opponents called for a nationwide general strike 총파업 and riots broke out <전쟁, 폭동 따위가> 발생하다 in one northern town.

 

As this country’s economy grows, so does its appetite. And that demand is fueling the global rise in food prices. They’re paying high prices on vegetables, tofu 두부, noodles, pork is up more than 63% from last year.

 

And in India, the government is taking its own drastic measures. The government here has banned 금지하다 almost all rice exports directly increasing the price of rice around the world. 800 million people live on 먹고 살다 less than $2 a day here. This mother told us, her family is barely getting by 그럭저럭 꾸려나가다. And for the UN World Food Program which feeds 73 million people, one bread cup tells the story. They use it to measure a meal for a child.
