Call it another grim 불길한 sign of the times. The cost of filling up 자동차에 기름을 가득 채우다 a Ford F-150, the nation’s best selling vehicle, is now more than $100 which probably sounds quaint 불합리한, 부적당한 to truckers now paying as much as $1,200 to fuel a big rig <구어> 트럭. “It’s crazy out there. I know guys losing their trucks because of the fuel.”

 

At a hearing 청문회 on fuel prices in Washington today, there were calls on the Bush administration 행정부 to stop filling the strategic petroleum reserve 전략 석유 저장고 and use that oil to help distressed 괴로운, 궁핍한 truckers and drivers. “Ending the fill of the reserve could reduce prices by about $2 per barrel of oil and 5 cents per gallon of gas.”

 

And nearly half the nation’s restaurants report business is down. Rising food prices have cut into profits and many customers cannot afford to eat out 외식하다 after buying gas and groceries 식료 잡화류. “We’re feeling squeezed <경제적으로> 압박하다 every which way.”

 

Here’s one more way to measure the misery. With gas now averaging $3.51 a gallon, it would take a minimum wage 최저임금 worker 18 hours. That’s more than 2 days of work to make enough to fill up 기름을 가득 채우다 that Ford truck, the most popular vehicle on the road right now. Charlie?
