Good evening? We start tonight with one of those colossal 엄청난, 어마어마한 mistake you wouldn’t expect, even the government was capable of making, but it has. The Veteran’s Administration 재향 군인국 says an employee took home electronic disks containing the personal records, including Social Security Numbers of 26 and a half million Americans, then reported them stolen by a residential burglar <주거침입>강도.

In an era 시대 when identity thieves use such data to hack into 불법 침입하다 everything from personal bank accounts to sensitive business records, the implications 관련, 연루 of all this could be enormous. Bob Orr in Washington has our report. Bob?

Well, Bob? By crime standards, it look at the outset 시초, 발단 to be a too big burglary, but the potential for damage in millions of veterans is huge. Sources tell CBS news the break-in 주거침입 occurred more than 2 weeks ago at the home of a Veteran’s Affairs data analyst in a suburban Maryland neighborhood just outside of Washington. Officials say the mid-level career employee without permission had carried home a work project, involving computerized files containing the names, Social Security Numbers and other personal information for 26 and a half million US veterans.

Police say burglars broke into the home, snatched 날치기하다 the laptop and external drive and a bag containing computer disks. Investigators believe it’s likely the burglary was carried out by street thugs 폭력배 who may not know what they have or how to access the information. Sources say other break-ins have occurred in the same neighborhood including a second burglary involving computer equipment which happened just a few blocks away. But investigators are puzzled 곤혹하게 하다 by the fact that the computer and data files appear to be the only significant links taken from the VA employee’s home. So the government now is sending letters to veterans warning them to monitor bank statements, credit reports and credit card bills to look for signs of suspicious activity.
