In South Korea, a huge protest over beef. 80,000 people gathered in the capital today outraged 격분하게 하다 at plans to resume 재개하다 imports of beef from the US. They fear mad cow disease 광우병. Both the US and the government of South Korea insist American beef is safe, but much of the South Korean public, as you can see, just doesn’t believe it.

For much of this evening, one fact was as clear as the flames engulfing 감싸다, 완전히 뒤덮다 the airliner on the tarmac 활주로 of Khartoum airport. That the death toll 사망자수 was likely to be high. Emergency escape shoots 조명 could be seen through the flames.

 

And a Sudanese Airways spokesman is being quoted 인용하다 locally saying more than 90 passengers escaped from the wreckage 잔해, 파편, many suffering from burns. Estimates of the death toll now range from several dozen to well over a hundred.

 

The flight originated ~에서 발차하다 in Amman, Jordan and stopped in Damascus, Syria before heading for Khartoum. Most of the passengers were Africans, the airline says, with a few non-Sudanese nationals. Sudan Airways says the aircraft was a modern Airbus A310, it should’ve been able to cope with ~에 대처하다 the conditions.

 

One local official says an engine caught fire just after landing. Another version says the plane veered off ~를 이탈하다 the runway 활주로. Relatives of those onboard have gathered at the airport waiting for news of who survived this crash and who didn’t. Mark Phillips, CBC News, London.
