The record price of gas is changing more than America’s car buying habits, it’s beginning to change the way we work. In an effort to cut down on 줄이다 commuting costs, today 4000 city employees in Birmingham, Alabama began working a four day week. It’s an idea that could be coming to an office near you. Here’s David Muir.

 

Three day weekends were once considered a luxury, they’ve now become a necessity 불가결한 것 for a growing number of workers across this country. Employees pinched 괴롭히다, 위축시키다 by gas prices now pleading with 간청하다 their bosses for help. “It’s much more expensive to get to work and employees want answers from their employers, how are they going to help them fix it.”

 

Graphics designer Kim Nulla asked that question and her boss’s answer, a four day work week, ten hours a day, eliminating 제거하다 one day of commuting. It is welcome relief for this mother who spends $81 a week to fill up her tank, and now only pays for four days of day care. “I’m seeing at least 20 to 30 dollars just in a week’s time savings. “

 

And many companies across this nation are following suit 선례에 따르다, a new survey of 100 medium and large companies shows that 57% are now offering some sort of relief. 20% provide car pools, 18% help with public transportation and 14% allow employees to work from home one day a week.

 

But just how much are employees really saving, eliminating just one day of commuting? The average commute is 30 miles both ways. For the average consumer getting 17 miles to the gallon and gas at $4.10, you save about $7.24 a day, $377 a year.
