No matter where the storm strikes, “It’s a tornado.” people say the same thing. If only they had had the slightest idea. “It was so fast, you know, it wasn’t even 5 minutes.” It happened again yesterday with the storm in New Hampshire. The US has the most powerful radar network in the world called Nexrad, but even so, the average tornado warning comes only 12 minutes in advance 미리. And three quarters of the warnings are false alarms.

“We don’t want to have people who are waiting 10, 15, 20 minutes and then nothing happens.” Which is why researchers are working on the next generation of tornado warning technology. They call it CASA, small high-tech radar like this one in Okalahoma that can be mounted 설치하다 to top buildings or even cell towers 휴대폰 기지국. Combined with powerful computers, they should eventually be able to tell you whether your street will be in danger, something Nexrad cannot now do.

Nexrad is so powerful that this antenna can see for 250 miles. But it can only see in the straight line and remember, the earth is curved 굽히다, 만곡하다. So there may be a funnel cloud 깔대기 모양의 구름 50 miles away, but this antenna cannot see whether it’s touching the ground. But because CASA’s so much smaller, you can dot 점재시키다, ~ 점점으로 표시하다 the country with as many as you need filling in the empty spaces between nextrad of domes.
