Beijing woke up today to ~ 중요성을 깨닫다 what passes here for a clear day and came alive <사람, 장소 따위가> 활기를 띠다. Street performers, families and card players all out because for days, this city has been smothered 숨막히게 하다 in a thick eye-burning cloud of pollution and humidity 습기. Olympic stadiums were nearly invisible 눈에 보이는. So was the Great Wall.

The sun in the afternoon was red, filtered through what the government called a sauna haze <fog보다 엷은 상태의> 안개, 엷은 연기, a 90-degree mixture 혼합, 혼합가스 of dust, factory emissions 배출<> and car exhaust 배출, 배기가스. Promising a green games, China closed hundreds of factories last spring. Stopped construction site in Beijing. And last week hauled 끌고 가다, 끌어내다 half the cars from the streets a million and a half vehicles. It may be too little too late.

Four of the last seven days failed to meet the government’s own standard for carbon monoxide 일산화탄소 and particle pollution, twice the levels recommended by the World Health Organization. The government is now considering drastic 과감한 urgent action pulling 90% of the cars off the roads and shutting more factories. The director of Beijing’s Environmental Authority said the decision will be made 48 hours before opening ceremony.

The improved air quality today is clearly bringing people back on the streets. This is the most crowded I’ve seen it here in a week. But many foreign athletes are so worried about pollution. They’re not coming to China until right before their events. Some teams are even bringing face masks in case the athletes need them to compete. With only 10 days to go, China promises to be ready even if it has to grind traffic and industry in the capital to a halt 멈추게 하다. Richard Engle, NBC News, Beijing.
