2008 베이징 올림픽 개막식

 

This is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams reporting tonight from Beijing. In Tiananmen Square, one hour before opening ceremony, thousands gathered to watch the fireworks. Police struggled ~하려고 애쓰다 to keep control. Reinforcements 보강, 증원 were called in ~ 불러 들이다. But overwhelmed 압도하다, the police gave in 굴복하다.

 

Just as the sky over the Tiananmen glittered 반짝이다 with fireworks. But the real show was across town. 91,000 filled national stadium. Acrobats <줄타기> 곡예사 circled the giant globe. Thousands of performers, many of them soldiers, reenacted ~ 재현하다 a spectacular 장관인, 굉장한 epic 서사시적 작품 of China’s 5,000-year history.

 

Gold medal gymnast 체조선수 Li Ning lit the Olympic flame in a manner no one will soon forget. “Speechless, unbelievable, I never see something like that in my life.” Apparently, fearing the crowds would be too big, the government cancelled plans to broadcast opening ceremony on outdoor screens. So people here packed <사람이> ~ 메우다 bars, noodle houses, even Laundromats 빨래방. Street corners became open theaters on this hot summer night.

 

The crowds are now coming out of the Olympic stadium. Inside opening ceremony went off 진행되다 without a hitch 거침없이, 걸림돌 없이. No disruptions 중단 or protests. Just 15,000 performers dancing and drumming with incredible precision 정확, 세심함.

 

But outside China, supporters of Tibet and China’s ethnic 소수 인종의 minorities 소수민족 clashed with ~ 충돌하다 police. In India, police detained 감금하다 hundreds of protestors. There were more violent demonstrations in Nepal. And in Turkey, authorities stopped a man setting himself on fire. But in China, today was a festive 경축의, 축제의 holiday. Celebrating an Olympics Game’s more about national pride than sport.
