올리언스, 2006 허리케인 대비 상태

Good evening? And we are indeed back in New Orleans for another visit tonight because this is the eve of the start of the 2006 hurricane season. Along the way, we hope to answer the question you hear throughout this region, are they ready for another one? Not everybody agrees on that answer. Heading up 주재하다 our coverage here tonight, my colleague Martin Savidge of our NBC News New Orleans bureau. Martin? This is the question of the hour.

Good evening, Brian? You’re right. And it doesn’t matter who you talked to whether it’d be federal officials or local officials. They tell you the same story. The city is ready. But talk to the people of New Orleans and many have serious doubts.

This may look like routine construction, but it's something potentially more ominous 불길한, a partial collapse 무너짐, 붕괴just this week of a 400-foot section of a hurricane protection levee 제방, . It was being repaired when the ground beneath simply gave way 무너지다. "We're looking at contingency plans 긴급사태대책 to flood-fight if we had to.”

Despite the setback 좌절, the army corps <육군>군단 of engineers is confident 확신하고 있는, 자신만만한 New Orleans will have the same level of protection it had before Katrina. But for residents like David Lomax of Lakeview, the incident only adds new concerns over how well the corps fixed 169 miles of failed levees, not to mention ~ 말할 것도 없거니와 the 181 additional miles of potentially weakened levees the corps didn't touch.

He, along with tens of thousands of other residents, face the new hurricane season in nothing but 단지, ~ an aluminum box. "Whenever there's something in the gulf coming, you know, we're going to be watching it very closely, and just get the heck out of Dodge 즉시 떠나다, <to leave or get out at once>."

Emergency responders had their own worries. New Orleans has fewer police officers, hospital beds and even weaker water pressure than a year ago. It's no wonder officials are adamant 단호한, 확고한. "When the mayor declares that they need to evacuate 피난하다 the city, you need to evacuate the city.”
