Good evening. Katie will join us in a few moments from the campaign trail 선거 유세 <코스>. But we begin with another nervous day in the financial markets. Today, the Fed 연방 준비 제도 이사회 showed some tough love by leaving a key interest rate unchanged, hoping the economy will ride out 이겨내다 the storm without a rate cut. The DOW bounced 튀어 오르다 back a bit, but nothing close to yesterday’s 500-point sell off. And all eyes are on AIG, the country’s biggest insurance company. Can it survive? The latest on another wild day from Anthony Mason.

 

After frantic 광란의, 극도로 흥분한 foreign markets tumbled 폭락하다, Fed chairman Ben Bernanke and other top economic advisors met with the president today. But the White House canceled plans for any comment. A day after the failure of Lehman Brothers and the fire sale of Merrill Lynch, attention turned to AIG, the latest financial giant in distress 괴로워서, 곤란 받고. A trillion dollar company, AIG is the largest insurer 보험회사 by assets 자산 in the country. But after its credit rating was downgraded over night, AIG must raise at least $40 billion and fast. So if they can’t get this cash, they’ll go bankrupt 파산하다? “That’s correct.”

 

In less than a year, AIG stock price has crumbled 무너지다 from more than $70 to less than $4. “Going down, down, down.” Money manager Michael Lewit says the insurance giant can’t be allowed to go under. “I think it’s a serious situation as this country has faced since The Great Depression <1929년 미국에서 비롯한> 대공황.” Behind closed doors at the Fed’s New York office, the government has been trying to work out a rescue plan. But whatever happens, veteran traders say the financial system has been changed forever.
