허리케인 IKE 휩쓸고 지나간 자리

From ABC News headquarters, this is World News with Charles Gibson. President Bush went to Texas today. He went to assess 평가하다 the damage caused by Hurricane Ike. He praised residents for dealing with a tough situation. An estimated 2.5 million Texans are without power. The death toll 사망자수 has now risen to 30. But there’s a new problem tonight. There is chaos 대혼란, 무질서 in Galveston as residents suddenly were allowed to return to check on their homes or what’s left of them. We have 2 reports beginning with ABC’s Erin Horng.

The line of cars stretched for miles. Evacuees 피난민 who had waited since Saturday to return to Galveston now stuck in an agonizing 고통스러운 hurry up and wait. “Just want to see if the house is okay and get what I need for my supplies.” The surprise announcement that residents could return home came just 6 hours before curfew 야간통행금지. And one day after the mayor said the city would likely be closed another week. The message to residents? Come, but don’t stay. It’s still too dangerous.

“When you hit 6 pm, you need to be gone. We have a $2000 fine 벌금 that we will enforce ~ 시행하다.” But despite the curfew, people remain lined up mile after mile to get into Galveston, much less to get out. Meanwhile, the grim 불굴의 search for victims continued today in communities wiped off the map. What are the chances you think you’ll find more victims? “You know, always hope for miracles.”

Officials simply don’t know how many people remain unaccounted for 행방불명이 . The lucky were rescued from Galveston Bay pulled from the waters by neighbors like Steve Hart. For many, the initial shock of Ike’s fury has now given way to painful resignation 체념, 단념. The road ahead will be daunting 위압적인. And it’s just now sinking in 서서히 이해되다.

Absolutely unreal <구어> 믿을 없는.” Amy Chance and her family lost 3 houses here. “For some reason, I’m looking for Christmas ornaments 장식품 and…mainly just pictures and china. Cause everything else is gone.” A reality facing so many now returning to these coastal communities. Eric Horng, ABC News, Oak Island, Texas.
