Good morning. It’s Monday, November 3^rd, from CBS News in New York City. I’m Meg Oliver. Wall Street and the auto industry are bracing 대비하다, 마음의 준비를 단단히 하다 themselves this morning. October sales reports are due ~할 예정인. In a year that seemed General Motors stock lose 80% of its value. No one is expecting good news. Here’s CBS’s Randall Pinkston.

 

GM, America’s biggest car manufacturer, reportedly suspended 잠시 보류하다, 일시 정지시키다 merger talks 합병회담 with Chrysler on Friday after the federal government rejected a request for a $10 million loan 대부, 융자금 to facilitate 촉진하다, 용이하게 하다 the deal. The right decision, say some analysts. “I don’t think that the Treasury 재무부 should be in the business of facilitating a merger.”

 

The auto industry has been battered 강타하다 by economic disruptions 붕괴 including last summer’s high cost of gasoline. And a credit crisis that makes loans harder to get and that’s driven sales down 20%. In September, for the first time in 15 years, US auto sales dropped below a million. But critics say the industry has been slow to innovate and must share the blame. “They never look into themselves and say, how could we do this cheaper and better and smarter.”

 

The trouble is the auto industry’s problems have ripple effects 파급효과 through the whole US economy. By some estimates, at least 13 million jobs are at stake 관련이 되어 and related industries affecting 100 to 200 billion dollars in consumer spending. “If these domestic automakers do not get right now, some relief, you may see a huge cataclysm 지각의 격변, 대변동 within the auto sector <사회, 산업 등의> 부분, 분야 overall. That’s not just gonna affect Michigan, it is gonna affect the nation.”

 

Michigan’s Jennifer Granholm is one of six governors who sent an urgent 긴급한 letter to the federal government requesting fast tracking 무수정 일괄승인 for an already approved $25 billion loan package to help the industry develop fuel-efficient 연료효율이 좋은 cars. “It’s an American imperative 필요성. We have to keep these jobs here. We have to keep this industry here. We have to have a manufacturing sector in the United States.”
