Good evening, everyone. America’s economy is sending out another SOS and Washington’s ready with more life preservers 구명기구. More on the troubles in Detroit in a moment, but first another major development 새로운 소식. The government and several big banks have agreed to renegotiate mortgages for struggling home owners.

 

For many of the help can not come soon enough, nearly 8 million home owners are underwater 손실 상태에 있는. They owe more than their house is worth. 2 million more are headed that way. That’s almost a quarter of all home mortgages. Bill Retiker reports on what the government and the banks are doing about it.

 

For home owners drowning 익사하다 in mortgage debt, help is on the way. Today, the federal housing finance agency which recently took control of mortgage giants, Fannie May and Freddie Mac, threw a lifeline to help keep home owners afloat 빚지지 않다 by modifying their loans. “This affordable payment will be achieved through a mix of reducing the mortgage interest rates, extending the term of the mortgage, are even deferring 뒤로 미루다 payment on a part of the principle.”

 

The impact could be substantial 상당한. Fannie and Freddie own or guarantee half of all US home mortgages nearly 31 million of them. And it bolsters 튼튼하게 하다 similar initiatives by other mortgage holders. The FDIC 연방 예금 보험 공사 got the ball rolling 일을 시작하다 offering to modify crushing housing loans when it took over Pasadena based Indymac in July. JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, HSBC, all lowering interest rates for hundreds of thousands of borrowers. Now today giant Citygroup is weighing in 끼어들다, reaching out to half million borrowers to see who needs help.
