There are concerns that it could trigger 일으키다 new tensions 긴장, 불안 between old rivals, India and Pakistan. The fact that both are nuclear nations is just part of the problem, part of what makes this such a big story. More from our chief foreign affairs correspondent 특파원 Andrea Michel.

And since 911, Washington has poured <돈 등을> 쏟아 넣다 more than $11 billion into Pakistan to buy its cooperation in the war on terror. The result? Osama Bin Laden is still at large <범인 따위가> 잡히지 않은 most likely in Pakistan’s untamed 야생의 territories. And Pakistan is a breeding 번식시키는 ground for home-grown terror groups like the one that US believes attacked India. Not Al Qaeda, but US officials say closely linked dedicated to fermenting ~을 자극하다 a regional war. “The purpose of the Mumbai terrorist attacks was exactly to reignite ~에 다시 점화하다 the old tensions between India and Pakistan which were beginning to subside 가라앉다.”

 

How does that affect the US? Fearing retaliation 보복 from India, Pakistan may redeploy 150,000 troops from its afghan border to its border with India. A huge setback 좌절 for American efforts to get Pakistan to hunt down Al Qaeda. Nuclear weapons, terror groups and weak governments are daunting 위압하는 prospect 전망 for any new president.
