그리스, 폭동으로 마비사태

Turning overseas, we have the latest now on an ugly situation that’s been playing out <감정을> 행동으로 나타내다 this week in Greece. Started Saturday when police shot and killed a teenager in Athens. It was called an accident. But it trigged 유발하다 a wave of <감정 따위의> 고조, 높아짐 outrage that led to rioting 폭동 across the country. Today, the violence there took a new turn. Correspondent Robert More of our British broadcasting partner ITN is in Athens tonight.

It had been intended as a peaceful day of protest to coincide with 동시에 일어나다, 일치하다 a nationwide strike 파업. Within minutes, the rally 집회 by Greek workers was hijacked 강요하다 by anarchists 무정부주의자. And so began a fifth day of rioting. Even on the fringes of ~ 바깥 가장자리에, 주변부에 the violence, passions are high.

Arguments are breaking out 일어나다 on street corners. “You only have to watch and listen.” To realize this is not just a security problem, but a full scale political crisis for the Greek state. And tonight around Athens University, the heartland 중심부 of student radicals 과격파, rioting is flared up 돌발하다 again.

Anarchy 혼란, 무정부상태 in Athens, of course, is nothing new. But what has shaken people is the destructive 파괴적인, 부정적인 fury 분노. And it’s being driven as we find out by talking to people by a hatred 증오 of the state and the police in particular. There’s anger at political corruption 부패 and at economic prospects. In both Athens and Patras, there is still no sign the protest will end any time soon. Robert More, NBC News, Athens.
