Good morning. From CBS News headquarters in New York, this is Up to the Minute. I’m Meg Oliver. The Israeli defense force is calling up <군대를> 동원하다 the reserves 예비군 and circling 에워싸다 Gaza with ground forces 지상군 as the Middle East braces for <공격 등에> 대비하다 an expected military escalation <임금·물가·전쟁 등의> 단계적 확대 in the Gaza Strip. CBS’s Elizabeth Palmer has more.
The most visible target of Sunday’s bombing was Gaza’s Seraya prison. But Israeli war planes also attacked metal workshops, trucks carrying contraband 밀수, 불법거래 fuel and the network of tunnels that runs from Gaza to Egypt that the Israeli say is used to smuggle 밀수입하다 weapons and fighters. The bombing is designed to cripple 무력하게 하다 Hamas’s ability to attack Israel. Just last week, a truce 휴전, 정전 between the two ran out 다하다, 끝나다 and Hamas 팔레스타인의 반 이스라엘 과격단체 fighters had resumed 다시 시작하다 firing 발사하다 rockets into southern Israel killing one man in a border town.
Saturday’s heavy bombing targeted Hamas security installations 시설. But in the crowded Gaza Strip, they’re located dangerously close to houses and apartments. Most of those killed were Palestinian police. But there were hundreds of wounded victims, too. Many obviously civilians and some of them very young.
The International Red Cross says Gaza’s hospitals are now overwhelmed ~에게 감당하지 못할 정도로 짐을 지우다 and unable to cope. While most of the day, the streets of Gaza were empty as people hid in their homes. In spite of international pressure on both sides to end the violence, Israel is massing 집중시키다 troops on Gaza’s border and is to call up 6,000 army reservists 예비군, 보충병.
